This month, we honor our nation’s heroes—our veterans.
Every year on November 11th, Americans come together to observe Veterans Day, a national holiday dedicated to recognizing the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. This day is more than just a patriotic gesture; it is a moment to reflect on the strength, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment that veterans have shown to our country.
So, what does Veterans Day really mean, and how can we take this time to celebrate the stories that often go untold?
What Is Veterans Day?
Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. In 1954, it was officially renamed to honor all U.S. military veterans, regardless of when or where they served.
Unlike Memorial Day, which pays tribute to those who lost their lives in service, Veterans Day recognizes every service member—past or present—who wore the uniform. Whether they served in combat zones or provided critical support stateside, each veteran has played a vital role in defending our nation’s freedoms.
Dirt Legal wants to honor and highlight members of our community and express our gratitude to them.
Honoring Veterans in Our Community
This year, we’re proud to shine a light on remarkable veterans who represent the spirit of service, leadership, and resilience.
Wen Martinez – United States Marine Corps (USMC)
Wen Martinez served with distinction in the United States Marine Corps (USMC), playing a crucial role in both national defense and international humanitarian missions. As a Marine, Wen was trained to respond to threats with precision and strength, deploying rapidly around the world as part of the USMC’s crisis response teams.
His work encompassed a variety of capabilities—from combat readiness to humanitarian assistance—demonstrating that Marines don’t just fight wars; they also save lives. Wen’s service is a powerful reminder of the versatility and resilience that define the Marine Corps.
“Adapt and overcome” was not just a motto; it was Wen’s daily reality.
Matthew Remkiewicz – United States Navy
Matthew Remkiewicz served in the United States Navy, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant and held the esteemed position of Surface Warfare Officer. In this role, he was responsible for commanding naval vessels, overseeing complex missions, and leading teams of sailors with skill and integrity. Matthew served from 2003 to 2019.
Matthew’s career was built on leadership, strategy, and responsibility as he navigated some of the most advanced warships in the world. His dedication to his craft and his crew continues to inspire those around him today.
From charting courses to guiding sailors, Matthew’s journey embodies the Navy’s core values: honor, courage, and commitment.
