COCOA BEACH, FL — The Atlantic coast served up a full weekend of offshore action as the 2026 IHRA Offshore National Championship rolled into Cocoa Beach, Florida, for Round 3, Thunder on Cocoa Beach. Representing Dirt Legal, the Dirt Legal Velocity Offshore Team returned to a venue where it has made its mark before, with driver Brad Christopher. Sister team Ride Legal Velocity also came to race, and Scott McCormick delivered emphatically in Class 600, taking the race win and adding another chapter to Velocity Powerboats’ storied record on the water.
DIRT LEGAL VELOCITY — Class 700: LEADING THE PACK EARLY
From the moment the green flag dropped on Race 1 of Class 700, Dirt Legal Velocity made a statement. Brad Christopher put the #789 Velocity Punisher 22 at the front of the field, leading the opening lap ahead of a competitive nine-boat grid. The early pace was aggressive, with Brad posting a fast lap of 8:52.136, the second fastest lap in the race, demonstrating the raw speed in the Dirt Legal machine.
The team ultimately completed two laps and was classified third in the final results, finishing ahead of Safecash / XINSURANCE and Team Progression REDRUM, who retired after one lap. The winning margin at the top was razor-thin — Pist’n Broke edged Fuel 1 Team by just 0.254 seconds in one of the closest finishes of the entire weekend, highlighting just how competitive Class 700 is at this level.
Showing early race pace and leading the opening lap underlines exactly why Dirt Legal Velocity is a championship-caliber outfit. In offshore racing, conditions change every lap, and Brad Christopher brings the composure and technical skill to adapt. That is the same mindset Dirt Legal applies off the water: do it right, remove friction, and deliver outcomes that count.

RIDE LEGAL VELOCITY — CLASS 600: RACE WINNER
If the Class 700 result showed grit, the Class 600 result showed dominance. Scott McCormick piloted Ride Legal Velocity (#611) to a class victory at Thunder on Cocoa Beach, leading from lap two all the way to the checkered flag across four laps of racing. The winning time of 30 minutes 17 seconds, with a best lap of 6:52.556, put the field away decisively.
McCormick is one of offshore racing’s most accomplished throttlemen — a five-time APBA/UIM World Record holder, three-time National APBA Champion, and two-time APBA/UIM World Champion. Racing professionally since 1999, he also serves as the President of Velocity Powerboats and Checkmate Boats, combining factory-level engineering insight with elite racing execution. Saturday’s result in Class 600 was another reminder of why the Velocity program is regarded as among the best in the business.
Hammerheads (#628) crossed the line second, one lap down, while One Design Racing (#603) rounded out the podium in third.
