Off-Road Use: Registration Requirements

In Mississippi, dirt bikes are classified as Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs) and must adhere to specific regulations for off-road use:

  • Helmet Use: All riders under 16 years of age must wear a DOT-approved helmet when operating or riding on an ORV.
  • Safety Course: Riders under 16 must possess a certificate from an approved off-road vehicle safety course to operate on public property.
  • Operator’s License: Operators must have a valid driver’s license or a certificate from an approved safety course to operate on public property.
  • Public Land Use: ORVs are prohibited from being used on public roads or highways unless authorized by local ordinances.

Street Use: Converting a Dirt Bike to Street-Legal

Mississippi does not have a state-level registration for dirt bikes, and they are not issued license plates. Therefore, converting a dirt bike to be street-legal is not possible under current state laws.

Key Points:

  • No State Registration: Dirt bikes are not registered with the Mississippi Department of Revenue and do not receive license plates.
  • Local Ordinances: Some local jurisdictions may allow dirt bikes on certain roads, but this is not applicable statewide.

Where You Can Ride

Off-Road:

  • Private Property: Riding is permitted with the landowner’s consent.
  • Public Lands: Riding is allowed on designated trails and areas where ORV use is permitted.

On-Road:

  • Public Roads: Generally prohibited unless authorized by local ordinances.

Rider Requirements

  • License: A valid driver’s license or a certificate from an approved safety course is required to operate on public property.
  • Helmet Use: Mandatory for riders under 16 years of age.
  • Safety Course: Required for riders under 16 to operate on public property.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Failure to adhere to Mississippi’s ORV laws can result in:

  • Fines: Monetary penalties for unregistered or improperly equipped vehicles.
  • Impoundment: Unauthorized vehicles may be impounded by law enforcement.
  • License Suspension: Operating without a valid license or insurance can lead to suspension of driving privileges.
