On November 11th, the United States pauses not just for a long weekend, but for a solemn and powerful moment of national reflection. This is Veterans’ Day, a federal holiday dedicated to honoring and thanking all military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

It is a day to acknowledge the courage, dedication, and sacrifice that underpin our national security and the freedoms we hold dear.

It’s more than a holiday; it’s a national promise.

From Armistice to Veterans Day: A History of Commitment

The date of November 11th is not random; it has deep, symbolic roots that trace back to a global conflict. The holiday was originally known as Armistice Day, created to commemorate the end of World War I. The major hostilities formally ceased at the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” in 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day in 1919, emphasizing peace and the heroism of those who served. In 1938, the date was officially made a federal holiday dedicated to the cause of world peace.

The world, however, continued to change. After the massive mobilization of Americans for World War II and the Korean War, it became clear that the day’s focus needed to expand. At the urging of veterans service organizations, Congress amended the Act in 1954, striking the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans”.

With the signature of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, November 11th became Veterans Day; a day to honor all American veterans of all wars.

Unlike Memorial Day (which specifically honors those who died in service), Veterans Day is a celebration of all who have worn the uniform, whether living or deceased, serving in conflict or in peace.

It preserves the historical significance of the date while broadening the focus to patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good across all generations.

The Unseen Service and Ongoing Sacrifice

#image_title

The core of military service is the willingness to accept the immense, often unseen sacrifice for the idea of the United States of America. This is a commitment rooted in the very real possibility that a service member will not return home. It involves being broken down as an individual to rise as part of a team, dedicating one’s life to something greater than self.

Veterans are the solid-steel backbone of our nation. Their service does not end with discharge papers; they return as teachers, healthcare providers, business owners, and community leaders, enriching our democracy every day.

This day is a crucial moment for all Americans to collectively recognize and thank these heroes. It is also a time to recognize the military families who share in the sacrifices and support them through long deployments and the unique challenges of military life.

The act of honoring veterans must also include a commitment to ensuring they have access to the healthcare, education, and employment opportunities they have earned. Our gratitude must be shown not just in words, but in a renewed commitment to support their transition and continued success in civilian life.
