Minimum Driving Age
In California, individuals can obtain a provisional instruction permit at 15½ years old. To acquire this permit, applicants must:
- Complete a DMV-approved driver education program
- Pass a written knowledge test
- Provide parental or guardian consent if under 18
After holding the permit for at least six months and meeting additional requirements, individuals can apply for a provisional driver’s license at 16 years old.

Learner’s Permit Rules

Road Rage and Reckless Driving Laws
Reckless driving is defined as operating a vehicle with willful disregard for safety. Penalties include:
- Up to $1,000 in fines
- 90 days in jail

Points System
California uses a point system for tracking violations:
