What does it look like when a championship-winning offshore team shows up to one of the most competitive venues on the IHRA Offshore National Championship calendar? It looks a lot like Saturday, May 16 at Thunder on Cocoa Beach — where Team Dirt Legal Velocity ran at the front of a stacked Class 700 field and sister team Ride Legal Velocity took the class win outright in Class 600.
Round 3 of the 2026 IHRA Offshore National Championship brought some of the best offshore racers in the country to the waters off Cocoa Beach, Florida. For driver Brad Christopher and throttleman Connor Langheim, it was another chance to show what the Velocity Punisher 22 and a Mercury Racing 300R V8 can do when it matters.
Team Dirt Legal Velocity Leads Early in Class 700
Offshore racing rewards the bold, and Team Dirt Legal wasted no time proving its intentions. When the green flag dropped on Race 1 of Bracket 700, Brad Christopher put the #789 Dirt Legal Velocity boat at the front of the field, leading the opening lap in a nine-boat class that included some of the most experienced names in the sport.
The pace was sharp from the jump. Brad posted a fast lap of 8:52.136 — the second-fastest lap in the entire Class 700 race — which tells you everything about where the team’s speed is relative to the competition. In offshore racing, finding clean water and maintaining a consistent pace through chop and wake is as much a skill as raw horsepower. Christopher and Langheim did exactly that.
The team completed two laps and was classified third on the day. At the top of the order, Pist’n Broke edged Fuel 1 Team by just 0.254 seconds in one of the closest finishes of the entire weekend, showing just how tight the Class 700 competition is at this level. Leading the opening lap and posting that kind of fast-lap speed puts Team Dirt Legal squarely in the mix every time it lines up.
Ride Legal Velocity Wins Class 600
While the Class 700 race was all about pace and grit, the Class 600 result was a flat-out statement. Scott McCormick piloted the #611 Ride Legal Velocity boat from third on lap one to the lead on lap two — and never looked back.
McCormick ran four clean laps to take the class win in 30 minutes 17 seconds, with a best lap of 6:52.556. Hammerheads finished second, one lap down, and One Design Racing rounded out the podium in third. It was the kind of controlled, front-running performance that wins championships.
McCormick is no stranger to the winner’s circle. A five-time APBA/UIM World Record holder, three-time National APBA Champion, and two-time APBA/UIM World Champion who has been racing professionally since 1999, he is also the President of Velocity Powerboats and Checkmate Boats. The win at Cocoa Beach adds another entry to an already elite résumé. Built to Win — On and Off the Water
Dirt Legal does not just sponsor powersports teams because it looks good on a hull. We do it because we are genuinely rooted in the culture. Our journey started with dirt bikes. We wanted to give riders the freedom to enjoy their machines on any road, any trail, without the headache of paperwork slowing them down. That passion has grown to cover the water, the track, and every rig in between.
The Dirt Legal Velocity Offshore Team races a Velocity Punisher 22 built from carbon-fiber and composite materials, powered by a Mercury Racing 300R V8. Brad Christopher and Connor Langheim have already secured the Class 700 title at the Key West World Championship and a class win at Race World Offshore in Chicago. Cocoa Beach continues to build momentum toward what this team is chasing: another championship.
Register Your Boat the Easy Way
Racing on the IHRA Offshore National Championship circuit is the dream. But every boat owner knows that the paperwork side of things is anything but glamorous. Between titling, registration, and navigating state-by-state rules, it is easy to spend more time at a desk than on the water.
That is exactly the problem Dirt Legal was built to solve. We specialize in boat titling and registration, and we handle the entire process so you can focus on the part you actually signed up for.
And when it comes to protecting your vehicle, proper documentation matters more than most owners realize. From proving ownership to avoiding registration headaches down the road, having the right paperwork in place can save you serious time and frustration.
